From what I remember, I believe the Croyden (UK) Museum was just such a
project as well.
They were attempting to bring people back to the downtown that had turned
into a 1960's concrete jungle. Their Museum was paired up with the new
Library with many positives and negatives.
I would contact them if you would like some UK examples.

Subject: Re: effect of museums for revitalization of the city

Museums can be significant in downtown and urban revitalization. But new
museum construction projects are expensive. The jury is still out on many
projects which may or may not succeed economically.

Here is a short list of projects in NY and nearby states worth looking at
which are partly intended to help revitalize their communities. Many have
received state grants, economic development loans and the like. Some are
just getting started. I'll leave it to you to look into these and determine
if they are successes or not.

I should make special mention of four NY communities where tourism is very
important and museums are a major factor in local economic life. You could
do a case study just on these:

New York City

Cooperstown NY

Niagara Falls NY

Corning NY.

Specific institutions to look at are:

North Adams, MA - Mass MOCA [Museum of Contemporary Art]

Springfield MA - Basketball Hall of Fame

South Norwalk CT - Maritime Center and IMAX (tm) Theater

Bridgeport CT - Barnum Museum

Scranton PA - Steamtown

Queens NY - P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Gallery

Rochester NY - Strong Museum

Troy NY - Rensselaer County Center for the Arts (now Arts Center for the
Capital Region); Junior Museum; Rensselaer County His. Soc.

Schenectady NY - Schenectady Museum; Proctor's Theatre.

Seneca Falls, NY - National Women's Hall of Fame; Women's Rights National
Historic Park; Urban Cultural Park.

Tupper Lake, NY - Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks [under
development]

Oneonta NY - National Soccer Hall of Fame

Elmira NY and Horseheads NY - National Soaring Museum; National Warplane
Museum

Glen Cove, NY - North Shore Historical Museum [under development]

Lake Placid NY - 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Museum

Ticonderoga NY - Fort Ticonderoga

Norwich NY - Northeast Classic Car Museum

Hammondsport NY - Glenn H. Curtiss Museum

Medina, NY - Medina Railroad Museum

Garden City, NY - Museums at Mitchel Field, including Cradle of Aviation
Museum, Long Island Children's Museum, others.

Poughkeepsie, NY - Young-Morse Historic Site (Samuel F. B. Morse House)

Riverhead, NY - Atlantic Coast Aquarium

Blue Mountain Lake NY - Adirondack Museum

Hello,
I am a graduate student, studying cultural policy, especially interested in
museums and the public in today's social context.
I am now working for a research project on the
"collaboration of the city and cultural organizations for mutual
development"
dealing with the effect of art and museums for revitalization of the city.
Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is I think an interesting example, as a museum
contributed to the revitalization of the city in terms of cultural
activities,
tourism, economy et al. (are there any other examples you know, both
successful and
projects with problems or failed?)

Further study on the transformation of museums, public and cultural policy
is necessary. I am still wondering how well this emerging model of cultural
policy
of public and private sectors together applied to the theory and analyzed.

If any of you suggest useful books, thesis, cases,
or persons and organizations could be referred, it would be helpful.
Any advice on this matter will be appreciated.

I hope anyone involved in or studying museums or public policy could share
opinions on the impact of art and museums on the public or the city.
Looking forward to feedback on the list or to my e-mail address below.

Thank you in advance.
