Elizabeth Perkins: Your query was forwarded to my attention. Traditionally,
a cloth tape (with identification in pencil) is hand-sewn with a blunt
('tapestry') needle to the verso of the carpet. The stitches do not
penetrate the yarns but loop around the warp or weft and avoid displacing
any knots. A weak thread is used. Ink markings are discouraged as the
pigment/dyes may bleed. Photographic documentation is strongly encouraged
for collection record-keeping. Sincerely yours, Mary Ballard, Senior
Textiles Conservator, Smithsonian Center for Materials Research & Education
(SCMRE)

Hello,
Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to affix some sort of
identification tag or label to antique carpets? I work for a private
collector who has a number of Persian carpets, ranging from 17th century to
early 20th, that I need to tag for him and I'm not sure the best way to go
about it.
I'd greatly appreciate any advice.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
