Perhaps you should check out Past Perfect.  It can manage mailing lists
and track memberships and other contacts for a very reasonable price,
and it comes with a collections database as well.  For a smaller museum,
it can do most of what you need for both collections management and
memberships (not as comprehensive as Raiser's Edge, but lots cheaper and
very easy to use).  They are at http://www.museumsoftware.com (a demo
version is available).
