Reports to:    Director of Education and Public Programs
Hours:         Full-time, Mondays ­ Fridays, with occasional weekends
Salary:        Competitive, commensurate with educational background and
               professional experience

About the Schenectady Museum

The Schenectady Museum is a 65-year old teaching institution with a mission
to engage and educate audiences using the fields of art, nature, science,
technology, and cultural heritage to inspire informed reflection and
dialogue about the Museum¹s surrounding community.  Interpretive themes
focus on creative forms of expression, community heritage and evolution,
relationships between nature and humans, and technological advancements that
affect communities.

The Schenectady Museum is in the midst of completing a master plan for
growth and expansion linking it to regional redevelopment activities and
positioning it as one of the major cultural organizations in a three-city
region. The opportunity is ripe for a professional, highly motivated
individual to play a significant role in reshaping the Museum¹s Education
Department and its public program offerings, as well as to make
contributions to future plans for the department¹s long range success.
 

Job Summary

The Public Programs Coordinator is responsible for the overall development,
implementation, and evaluation of on-going public programs for adults,
senior citizens, families, and special audiences.


Job Duties 

The Public Programs Coordinator will develop, implement, and evaluate
programs on an on-going basis.  The first priority is to establish a series
of programs especially geared to senior citizens.  The Public Programs
Coordinator will also oversee:
… Family programs, hands-on workshops, and performances
… Academic programs and collaborations with local universities
… Topics to Go lunchtime lecture series
… Children¹s Birthday Party programs
… Adult lecture series, hands-on workshops, and performances
… Concert Series in collaboration with Union College
… Explorers summer program (and supervises part-time summer program staff)
… Offsite collaborative programs and special day events
… Young adults / professionals programs
… Hands-on programs and performances for special needs audiences

Other responsibilities include:
… Assisting with Festival of Nations large-scale annual event
… Serving on the Program Committee
… Working as a key team player in establishing audience development
strategies and marketing of education programs
… Writing and coordinating public programs-focused grants, as needed
… Developing special materials for families and special audiences (i.e.
travel trunks, family guides)
… Developing budget for public programs in collaboration with Director of
Education and Public Programs


Qualifications

Master¹s degree in public history, museum studies, or education required.
At least three years of experience with public programming in museums or
historic sites required.  Excellent oral and written skills are necessary
for this position. Ability to relate to and program for a diversity of
audiences is necessary.  A passion for museum work, an understanding of how
to bring about change in museums, and involvement in external museum-related
committees and organizations are essential qualities looked for in
applicants.  Ability to take advantage of the latest developments in the
museum community in order to advance the Schenectady Museum¹s reputation as
an innovative teaching institution also is desired.
