CULTURAL CONNECTIONS PRESENTS

HOW TO CREATE & SUSTAIN ADVISORY COMMITTEES
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14, 1999
2:30 - 5:00 p.m.
AT THE OAKLAND ZOO

American museums have enlisted the help of advisory committees for nearly a
century, and the relevance and value of these committees continues to grow. We
will explore three types of advisory committees—permanent community-based
groups, exhibition or project-based groups, and youth advisory groups—as
resources for exhibitions and programs in terms of content development,
relevance and community involvement. The program will include presentations
and
a dialogue with our panelists followed by questions from the audience.

Barbara Henry • Chief Curator of Education, Oakland Museum of California
Barbara will share her experiences with sustaining permanent community
advisory
committees at the Oakland Museum, including the Latino Advisory Committee and
the African American Cultural Programs Advisory Committee.

Dana Powell • Director of Education, Triton Museum of Art
Dana will focus on the development and maintenance of youth advisory
committees.
Her master’s project, The Youth Advisory Group: Putting Young People's Ideas
to
Work, will be available for purchase at the program with all proceeds
benefiting Cultural Connections. Dana also works with advisory committees in
her current role at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, CA.

Vas Prabhu • Director of Education, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
Vas will address exhibition and project based advisory committees. She has
organized committees for several recent exhibitions including Beat Culture and
the New America and Rhapsodies in Black.

Beth Redmond-Jones • Principal, Redmond-Jones & Associates
Beth is an independent exhibition developer who recently managed the
production
of the traveling exhibition Animal Eyes, which was awarded First Place in the
1999 AAM Annual Exhibition Competition. Beth will explain the logistics of
working with a team of content advisors via e-mail during the development of
the
exhibition.
