Beth,
Others have brought up good points. Does the museum have a conflict of interest policy?

Another question is one of copyright. If the book was created during work hours then the employer would likely be seen as the copyright holder. If it was created after work hours, but with knowledge gained from doing one's job, then it will likely be seen as ok for an individual to hold the copyright. The trump card on this goes back to institutional policies. For instance if one works at a university, there are often strict guidelines surrounding copyrights and patents.

The 216 images used in the book are almost entirely from the collection of the curator's institution. The institution normally charges image reproduction and publication fees - but did not charge the curator any fees for use of the images in this book. The curator promotes the book in the media and does not reveal the fact that they will gain personally from the sale of the book. The institution stocks the book in the gift shop, promotes it online, etc.
