Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria

"PUBLIC PROGRAMMING", December 2-11, 1996

Lively, relevant programs which address public interests and issues,
develop community support, and generate revenue are a key to survival
for many museums and heritage agencies in the 1990s. This course
examines the central role of education, interpretation and public
programming, and emphasizes the importance of approaches which
balance community interests and curatorial priorities. You develop
your programming expertise through an integrated examination of:
- the role of programming in museums and heritage agencies
- identifying communities and assessing needs and interests
- public involvement in program development
- defining programming goals and policies
- communication theory and program planning
- program implementation, management and evaluation
- issues of access, point of view, multicultural perspectives,
intellectual and curatorial integrity, and technology
