As with all other policies in an institution or business, it should be
     laid out in writing that all materials generated by the activities of
     the office are office property and can only be used by personnel with
     the permission of the institution.  In terms of conservation treatment
     slides and such, there is a need for slide copies for portfolios,
     slide copies for workshops, et cetera.  These situations are normally
     ok when asking for the them, but a clear and documented policy will be
     better for everyone.
     He or she should know better.  This is not his/her home.

Subject: Ethics Question

I posted this earlier, but my subject line
was unclear.  Here's a second try.

It has been discovered that one of our
employees has been duplicating a large number
of slides for personal use.  These slides are from
our files of conservation treatments, collections
objects, and clients' objects.

When challenged, the employee claimed that there
are no "rules" regarding the use and duplication
of these images.  Everyone else feels that it
is simply understood that such material is the
property of the institution.

Now that it looks as if we will have to draft
such a policy, I am interested in your input.
