Well, there's Robert Bakker. He's really a paleontologist with a lot of
controversial theories, but he has written a popular book, bestseller I
think, called The Dinosaur Heresies... and he also illustrated it more than
competently. Not exactly a literary figure, but he fits your definition, I
think.
