George Washington attended a ball here at Tryon Palace in New Bern, NC on
his Southern Tour in 1891. He wrote in his diary, “Dined with the Citizens
at a public dinner given by them; & went to a dancing assembly in the
evening – both of which was at what they call the Pallace – formerly the
government House & a good brick building but now hastening to ruins.”
Here's an excerpt from an article in our newsletter about an 1891 ball in
New Bern commemorating Washington's visit:
The souvenir program from the event, in the collections of Tryon Palace
Historic Sites & Gardens, describes the festivities in great detail,
including the bows and curtsies made to George and Martha Washington, the
dancing of the minuet, the singing of “The Star Spangled Banner” and “The
Old North State, ” and the serving of an “exceedingly toothsome” supper. The
ball was reenacted with more enthusiasm than accuracy, however; both musical
selections had been composed after 1791, and Martha Washington had stayed
home during the arduous Southern Tour.

The 19th-century ball did not take place in the Palace as it had burned down
in 1798 and was not restored until the 1950s.
