This message was passed on to me. I hope your colleague has lots of time and
money to go around the country and look at Indian controlled museums. There
are LOTS of them and their range in interpretation and everything else is
from A to Z. To simply look at one or two is not adequate. I have no
suggestions about theory but suggest that you contact Mary Mcutcheon at
George Mason Univ in N. Virginia. I have probably misspelled her name but
she is faculty in the anthropology dept. She has lots of ideas about museum
practice.

Dear listers,
A colleague of mine in our anthropology department is developing a
master's thesis concerning the presentation of indigenous art and
artifacts.
He is interested in the differences between the way native peoples display
their own objects in their own museums, versus the way these items are
presented in other museums. He is struggling to locate some relevant
theoretical frameworks he could use to guide his project. Does anyone have
any thoughts or sources concerning theory that may be useful or relevant?
