Hello Sarah,

I'm not the most familiar with freezers for nitrate negative but as a general rule I would avoid self-defrosting freezers. My understanding is that they self-defrost by raising the temperature (more accurately not cooling to let the temperature rise) inside the freezer to remove the frost. The temperature variations are not the best for collections and depending on the condition of your negatives this may be an issue. More commercial options may work differently but something to keep in mind.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] freezer for nitrate negatives

Hello All!

We've received funding to purchase a freezer for cold storage of nitrate negatives. Does anyone have suggestions on a particular make and model of freezer (or ones to avoid)?

We are looking for something that is: frost-free, self-defrosting, energy-efficient, has heavy duty adjustable metal shelving and a lock on the door to prevent accidental opening, around $2200.

Thanks in advance!
