Also, don't discount a Public History program.  I got my MA at IUPUI in Indianapolis, which I recommend highly.  It wasn't expensive, since they gave me an 80% tuition waiver plus a paid internship for both years -- the cost of living is also pretty low.  The faculty is very supportive, and Indianapolis has some wonderful museums that partner with the program.  Class size is very small, so you really get to know the faculty and other students.

Everyone in my class who took the Museum Studies option (and wanted to continue in that field) got a museum job; we had 3 historic house curator/managers; two historical society curators, and a couple of us who went on to larger institutions.  Some decided that they would go into Historic Preservation, and wound up with very good jobs in that field.
