Hi,

have a look at the first volume of Daniel Boorstin´s award-winning trilogy,
The Americans
This has an extensive bibliography re the period and the use of tobacco as
legal currency.

Subject: Cost of 18th Century Tobacco Question

Hi all- I'm currently a graduate student in History at George Mason
University in Fairfax, Virginia doing an internship at George Washington's
Mount Vernon.

I am currently in search of the cost of 18th century tobacco- first, the
cost of tobacco if you were to walk in to a general store and buy a "pouch"
of it, and second, how much did the English merchants (who bought the
tobacco from Virginians) turn around and sell the tobacco for to the
manufacturers.

If anybody has any of this information and can share their sources with me,
or can give me some suggestions as to where to look for this information I'd
really appreciate it. I'm a little stuck, and I need the information for a
future exhibit.

Thanks so much for your help,
Erin Spahr
