What's the intended use of the "controlled vocabularies" you are looking
for? If for standardization of describing material culture objects, the
standard references I'm familiar with are "The Revised Nomenclature for
Museum Cataloguing" available from the Altamira Press
(http://www.altamirapress.com/Catalog/SingleBook.shtml?command=Search&db=%5EDB/CATALOG.db&eqSKUdata=0761991476)
and the Getty's Art and Architecture Thesaurus at
http://www.getty.edu/research/conducting_research/vocabularies/aat/about.html.

If you're looking for looking for vocabulary standards for referring to
different cultural groups, that's going to be more difficult, depending
on the cultures you're concerned with. I use Indian and Northern
Affairs Canada's "Words First" document
(http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/pr/pub/wf/index_e.html) in referring to
Canadian First Nations groups.

Or, did you have another specific application for controlled
vocabularies in mind?

Dear list-eners:
I am currently entering a new field, which means looking into the
database systems of archives and museums. I will be working with
controlled vocabularies vr. usability and am wondering if any of you
have information as to literature that are definite must-reads on the
matter?
Best,
Caroline
