Dear Lynn,
Our collections storage facility consists of two inter-connected
buildings, one of which is a Butler building. It consists of a steel
frame and steel wall panels. It offers high ceilings, large areas of
floor space with no columns and is virtually fire-proof. It works well
for us.
I think what your board members are getting at is that a basic Butler
building is fairly inexpensive and easily and quickly constructed. You
pour a concrete slab and erect the building over it.
What must be taken into consideration is all the additional expense
involved in making this basic shell into a suitable storage environment.
By the time that you add in insulation, HVAC, storage furniture and
systems, security and fire systems, and suitable work spaces and offices
the costs may be comparable to renovating an existing structure.
Sincerely,
David Ryan
