I actually have to comment on the "uncomfortable-ness"
of corsets.  As a Living History interpreter who wears
a corset 3-6 day a week, and does all kinds of period
work in it(walking, baking and cooking, laundry,
livestock care, etc.) I can tell you that a well made,
well fitting corset, laced properly gives a great
amount of comfort.  It supports the back and breasts,
takes the weight of your skirts off of your hips, and
aids posture.  I truly doubt that corsets, in their
many incarnations over hundreds of years, would have
survived if they were not functional.
