Rebecca,

One of our outdoor sculptures was recently on one of these geocaching
hunts. However, it was merely one of the stops directing people on to
another site, not the primary location. We were not asked ahead of time if
it was ok, but the people involved knew our concerns for the work and knew
that their use of the work did not involve anything of which we would
disapprove. Essentially, the information on the object's label was one of
the clues in a more extended search. We thought it was a good way to bring
a few extra people in to see the works, and it did not involve any physical
digging or interaction with the piece.

My primary concern with such a thing, done with your permission of course,
would be the possibility/likelihood of people getting their numbers wrong
and seeking to dig in the wrong place(s). Restricting the dig area, would
then undermine the challenge. The potential nuisance factor seems high,
unless you have property that you do not mind getting dug up. Although
normally, according to my limited research, the actual digging part is
minimal. We are not talking about six foot deep holes or anything.

If you want to be involved, but avoid the digging, perhaps you can provide
them some sort of other option for concealing the "treasure" without
actually digging. Put it under a large rock, in a hollow stump, under a
paving stone or plank, or in some other way disguise it, but still allow it
to be properly located via the global positioning devices. I'll bet they
have some options of their own.

Good luck.

Hello to all:

Have any of you heard of or been involved with "geocaching?" If not, it
is kind of like a glorified treasure hunt using a GPS device to find
"buried treasure." To learn more, you can access: www.geocaching.com.

What I am wondering is if any of you have had any experience with these
people digging for treasure on your site. We have had a request for
someone to bury treasure on our site, but are wondering if it is a
nuisance or no trouble at all. These people are supposed to ask before
they bury on your site, but a site that we are associated with has
recently found out that someone has buried treasure on there without
asking.

Any thoughts?
