You certainly live in an interesting community!

I would suggest calling getting a background check on the proprietor of the stable - arrests are a matter of public record (unless it's a minor) so that should provide enough to cover your legal issues in regards to the rumor. You should also be checking to make sure that the stables are properly insured, etc. I think that when it comes to anything that invovles kids that you have to be especially sensitive - and that the children should be properly supervised - perhaps the concerned parent would be willing to help chaporone the trip?
