The online Museum of Underwater Archaeology (MUA) is pleased to announce a recent contribution from the Pericles Research Group (PRG) in Western Australia. This avocational organization has initiated a mapping survey of the SS Pericles, a White Star Line vessel that sank off Cape Leeuwin in 1910.

The wreckage lies in 34 meters of water with strong currents and presents a challenging dive. The PRG represents a growing trend of ethically committed avocational divers seeking to help preserve submerged cultural resources rather than exploit them for private gain. By posting their work with the MUA they have shared the results of their time and effort with the general public whose history rests in the deep.

To see and read about this interesting shipwreck click the link below and select “In The Field” on the main page.

In other MUA news….

The East Carolina University Fall field school has moved out of the field and into the library and lab. The graduate students are now analyzing their data and creating site plans, and writing up the results of their work. They are posting weekly updates so be sure to check in to see how the project is progressing. It’s an excellent opportunity to see how professional underwater archaeologists are trained.

The Underwater Blogger has been silent recently but that doesn’t mean the MUA has been idle. Visit the blog component of the site to see what the MUA has planned for the next few months. There is a lot on the way.

As always the MUA invites individuals and organizations to post with us and share their work with the public. If you have questions or suggestions please feel free to send them to [log in to unmask]

We hope you enjoy our first Australian submission. Our thanks go out to Peter Buzzacott for sharing the PRG’s research with us.

Have a great Fall.
