Although I have not tried it myself, I have seen a demo of ImageAXS (sp?),
a flat-file database designed specifically for images. It comes in two
versions, with different numbers of availalbe data fields (mostly
user-definable). People in both the Art and Classics departments here are
using it for their slide collections and they seem happy with it. You can
download a demo from their web-site http://www.dascorp.com
