The third issue of the Balch Digest, a brief once-a-month electronic
newsletter, has just been distributed. The Balch Institute for Ethnic
Studies in Philadelphia is a leading museum, archive, and library studying
American immigration, ethnicity, and multiculturalism.

Its statement of purpose says in part "The Balch Digest calls attention to
developments, news, and opinions on American immigration, ethnicity, and
diversity....The Balch Institute wants to promote informed discussion among
the general public, academics, and students." It is e-mailed once a month
to a wide general audience as well as interested academics. It is not a
discussion-based list nor is it based on news of the Balch Institute itself.

The contents of the May 2000 issue are:

In this issue of the Balch Digest:
1) A National Poll Studies Various American Ethnic Groups
2) "The Nation" Publishes Historical Articles On-Line
3) "Chicago's Global Communities" - Information on New Immigrants
4) Czech Conference in Washington, DC
5) Balch Programs and Events
