Thought I'd weigh in on this stuff.

Paul is as right as rain. With the budget set in the $2,000 -
$3,000 range, buy a solid base system now and add onto it as $$$
allow. I purchased a Dell Dimension XPS-90 (90Mhz Pentium
processor) last fall and it makes PageMaker fly. No small trick. If
you are moderately computer-savvy, buy mail order and save $500. My
experience with Dell has been tremendous. Their support lines are
great and they addressed the Pentium flaw issue quickly and
efficiently (I have the new chip in my computer already). If you're
a bit computer nervous, then find a competitive local computer
retailer who can give you the ongoing support you need.

As to specs, get AT LEAST a 486DX66 processor, although for longer
term growth prospects buy a Pentium-based system (90 or 100 Mhz
chips, not the 60, 66, or 75). A Meg hardrive is a good idea, but
seriously consider going to 16 meg of RAM as it gives you room to
upgrade comfortably to the upcoming Windows95(96?.

I do everything from newsletters, brochures and catalogs to didactic
signage, and have found my system to be a life saver. WoOuld love to
help if you have more specific questions.
