I realize how silly this sounds before I post it, but
I do believe there is merit enough to suggest it to
risk being thought of as goofy.

Have you considered having someone search Ebay and
other online auction sites to see if such materials
are being offered there?  Out of boredom, I frequently
look at the Ebay jewelry gallery.  There is a LOT of
amber offered there.  You might even search on the
topic of amber and see if you recognize anything.

Someone foolish enough to steal it might be stupid
enough to post it.
