There is still time to enroll in the Collections Policy and Procedure class offered through the Artifact Collection Care Certificate Program at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. The course starts January 9, 2013 and runs through February 27, 2013 every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Gleacher Center in downtown Chicago. More information is available online at:

Course Description:
Museums collect and maintain artifacts and documents of historic, cultural, artistic and scientific significance for the benefit of the public. Effective policies and procedures are critical to managing collections in a manner that meets the standards of the museum field and maintains the public trust. Through lecture, discussion and workshop sessions, this class will explore the different aspects of museum collections policy and procedure, including accessions, deaccession, loans, collections access/use and documentation. Dealing with common collections management issues, such as old loans and undocumented artifacts, will also be addressed. Workshop sessions will provide students the opportunity to write a collections policy for a museum. By the end of the course, students will have the information and understanding to develop policies and procedures for their institutions and also to implement good registration and collections management practices.
