John S. Zvereff : New Secretary General of the International Council of
Museums (ICOM)

John Zvereff, a U.S citizen, has been appointed Secretary General of the
International Council of Museums- ICOM , by the Executive Council. John
Zvereff succeeds Manus Brinkman (from the Netherlands), who occupied this
post from 1998 to 2004. The new Secretary General took office in Paris on
November 2nd, 2004.
The Secretary General, is ICOM's Executive Officer and directs the
Organization, from its Paris Headquarters (France), with a multicultural
staff of fifteen. Under the aegis of the Executive Council, he will
implement the Strategic Plan of ICOM as well as the decisions and policies
adopted by the Organization's Council.
John Zvereff has a degree in Languages and Linguistics from Georgetown
University, in Washington D.C. (United States) and did graduate work in
Italian literature at Rutgers University in New Brunswick (New Jersey,
United States). An experienced linguist, John Zvereff is fluent in
English, Spanish, Italian and Catalan, and has a good knowledge of French
with communicative skills in Russian.
John Zvereff has an extensive international career in art and multicultural
non-profit institutions, where he held executive positions. Interim
Director of the Museum Society of Tangiers (Morocco) in 1976, and Director
of the American Language Centre of Tangier, he moved to Barcelona (Spain)
two years later, having been appointed Academic Director of the Institute
of North American Studies, and then Executive Director of the same
institution from 1980 to 1996.
From 1997 to 2002, John Zvereff served as Chief Executive Officer of the
Museu d'Art Contemporani in Barcelona (Spain), and for a year and a half
after that was an independent consultant for cultural and art projects.
The new Secretary General, assisted by his staff, will be responsible for
managing, co-ordinating and servicing a network of 20,000 museums and
museum professionals. Under the leadership of ICOM's new president,
Alissandra Cummins, and its Executive Council, John Zvereff will pursue a
more proactive role for the organization and new partnerships to allow for
increased and better services to its membership.

John S. Zvereff : Nouveau Secrétaire général au Conseil international des
musées (ICOM)

John Zvereff, citoyen américain, a été nommé par le Conseil exécutif,
Secrétaire général du Conseil international des musées (ICOM) . Il succède
à Manus Brinkman (Pays-Bas), qui fut en poste de 1998 à 2004. Le nouveau
Secrétaire Général a pris ses fonctions à Paris, le 2 novembre 2004. Le
Secrétaire général est le responsable exécutif de l'ICOM qu'il dirige du
siège de l'Organisation basé à Paris (France), avec une équipe
multiculturelle composée de quinze membres. Sous la direction du Conseil
exécutif, il met en oeuvre le plan stratégique de l'ICOM ainsi que les
décisions, et la politique arrêtée par le Conseil.
Diplômé en Langues et Linguistique, à l'Université de Georgetown de
Washington D.C., (Etats-Unis), John Zvereff a débuté un Doctorat de
littérature italienne à l'Université Rutgers (New Jersey, Etats-Unis).
Linguiste averti, John Zvereff s'exprime couramment en anglais, en
espagnol, en italien et en catalan ; il possède une bonne connaissance du
français et des notions de russe suffisantes pour lui permettre de
communiquer.
John Zvereff a effectué une longue carrière internationale dans l'art et
au sein d'institutions multiculturelles à but non lucratif où il a exercé
des fonctions de direction. En 1976, il cumule la fonction de directeur
par intérim du Museum Society of Tangier (Maroc) et celle de directeur de
l'American Language Center de Tanger (Maroc). Deux ans plus tard, John
Zvereff s'installe à Barcelone (Espagne) pour occuper le poste de directeur
académique de l'Institute of North American, Studies, (Barcelone). Il en
sera le directeur exécutif de 1980 à 1996.
Il a été le responsable, du Museu d'Art Contemporani, Barcelone (Espagne)
de 1997 à 2002. Par la suite, il fut consultant indépendant pour des
projets d'art et de culture pendant presque deux ans.
Assisté par son équipe, le nouveau Secrétaire général devra gérer, animer
et entretenir le réseau des 20.000 musées et professionnels de musée.
Sous la direction d'Alissandra Cummins, nouvelle présidente de l'ICOM et
du Conseil exécutif, John Zvereff s'est donné comme objectif de faire jouer
un rôle plus proactif à l'Organisation. Il entend également former de
nouveaux partenariats afin d'améliorer et augmenter les services aux
membres.

Museos (ICOM)

John S. Zvereff, ciudadano de los Estados Unidos de América, ha sido
nombrado Secretario General del Consejo Internacional de Museos (ICOM) por
el Consejo Ejecutivo de la Organización. Sucede a Manus Brinkman (Países
Bajos), que desempeñó esa función desde 1998 hasta 2004. El nuevo
Secretario General tomó posesión de su cargo el 2 de noviembre de 2004 en
París.
El Secretario General es el jefe de los servicios administrativos del ICOM
y dirige la Organización desde su sede de París (Francia) con la
colaboración de un equipo multicultural constituido por 15 personas. Bajo
la dirección del Consejo Ejecutivo del ICOM, implementa el Plan Estratégico
del ICOM y las decisiones y políticas adoptadas por ese órgano.
John S. Zvereff es licenciado en lenguas y lingüística por la Universidad
de Georgetown (Washington, D.C., EE.UU.) y ha realizado estudios de
posgrado en literatura italiana en la Universidad Rutgers de Nueva
Brunswick (Nueva Jersey, EE.UU.). Lingüista experimentado, John Zvereff
domina el inglés, el español, el italiano y el catalán, y posee buenos
conocimientos del francés, así como buenas nociones de ruso.
John S. Zvereff cuenta con una larga carrera profesional en el ámbito de
las artes, así como en instituciones multiculturales no-lucrativas, en las
que ha desempeñado cargos directivos. En 1976, ejerció simultáneamente las
funciones de director interino de la Museum Society of Tangier y director
del American Language Center de Tánger (Marruecos). Dos años después, al
haber sido nombrado jefe de estudios del Instituto de Estudios
Norteamericanos de Barcelona (España), se trasladó a esta ciudad, asumiendo
más tarde, entre 1980 y 1996, el cargo de director ejecutivo de este
organismo.
Ha sido gerente del Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) desde
1997 hasta 2002. A continuación, trabajó como consultor independiente para
proyectos artísticos y culturales por espacio de un año y medio.
Asistido por el equipo de la Secretaría, el nuevo Secretario General se
encargará de dirigir, y coordinar la red del ICOM, compuesta por 20.000
instituciones y profesionales museísticos. Bajo la dirección de la nueva
Presidenta del ICOM y de su Consejo Ejecutivo, Alissandra Cummins, el nuevo
Secretario General se ha asignado el objetivo de dinamizar el papel de la
Organización y establecer nuevas colaboraciones para incrementar la
cantidad y calidad de los servicios prestados a sus miembros.
