In response to your enquiry about museums and databases, you may be interested
to know that the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), in cooperation
with participating Canadian museums, provides access to a national database of
museum collections records in a searchable web format. This resource can be
found at http://www.chin.gc.ca and is known as Artefacts Canada. The Humanities
component is a database of approximately 2.5 million object records and images,
where available, based on the collections information provided by contributing
museums and galleries. Artefacts Canada: Natural Sciences contains approximately
1 million specimen records representing more than 28,000 different species based
on the collections information provided by contributing museums with images when
available. The Archaeological Sites component represents over 70,000 sites
across Canada. This resource is available free of charge.

CHIN's recently redesigned Great Canadian Guide, an internet gateway to
information on over 2400 Canadian museums, will be officially launched during
the week of June 21. It can also be accessed through our web site.

I hope you find this information useful. Please do not hesitate to contact me if
you have any questions concerning these services or their development.
