Margrethe:
I know this is far from what your looking for and
merely a commentary that struck me as I read your
e-mail.

I work for a small art museum. We cannot buy into
the blockbuster mentality. Really, we cannot afford
to. But what surprises me the most about blockbusters
are the effects that they have on the everyday
consumer that I would call a casual/low user of the
museum. We live fairly close to Chicago, close enough
to drive in or take the train in for an afternoon.
People regularly make the trip in to see Van Gogh,
Monet etc. Often these are people who won't drive
across town to enjoy the work at our museum or
regularly visit an art museum outside of a
blockbuster. I am often asked when we will have a
blockbuster or why we don't have a blockbuster.
People wonder why we are not showing Monet, Picasso
etc. I just find the secondary effects of the
blockbuster to be strong force in shaping people's
perception of art museums. To this type of visitor,
anything less than a blockbuster must seem unworthy of
their time. Thus, our value as an art museum must seem
rock bottom.

Good luck!
