Don't you think, however, that the positions that absolutely require a PhD
are limited to a handful of top-level curatorial jobs...specifically in art
museums?  And that the people who hold these jobs not only have the degree,
but extensive experience (perhaps gained while working on their PhDs) and
published work?  Certainly the original poster should aspire to that, if it
is her goal, but many smaller art museums and arts centers would welcome a
qualified MA or MFA --- or am I totally off base here?  As my colleague in
Western PA states, a Ph D is certainly not necessary for a curator in a
history museum, except possibly in the largest institutions with a many
areas of specialization.

Also not a PhD, and without the intestinal fortitude to pursue one,
