Basic Collections Care Workshop Series

A series of five video-teleconference workshops held simultaneously in
Aberdeen, Pierre, Sioux Falls, and Spearfish, South Dakota and St. Paul,
Minnesota.
II.  Storage For Infinity
June 11, 1998, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. central time
Although storage is rarely planned into a small museum, more and more
museums have collections overflowing their exhibit requirements, forcing
the creation of storage in closets, garages and basements. Libraries and
archives (often part of a smaller town's museum) keep the majority of
their collections in storage. This second workshop will concentrate on
storage philosophy, the need for rotating light-sensitive collections to
a storage area, collections handling techniques, material and techniques
for storing collections. Good and poor materials will be compared.
Techniques for working with these materials will be covered. Handouts
will expand on each of the topics covered. This workshop is an overview,
introducing students to topics that will be further explored through
reading and homework assignments.

Homework Options: (to be completed before the next workshop)
1.  Construct a total of either 10 artifact boxes with padded support
shelves or 10 book boxes or 20 book wrappers. Provide photographs or a
sample.

2.  Up-grade a storage area, photograph, and write a report on the
project.

3.  Write collections handling and care guidelines for your
institution.  Purchase gloves and provide a training session for
volunteers and staff.  Provide photographs or a videotape of the
training.

Instructor:  Helen Alten, Conservator, Northern States Conservation
Center, will conduct the sessions live from the Twin Cities via an
interstate interactive terrestrial video network.  Ms. Alten has taught
preventive conservation courses on a variety of subjects as State
Conservator for the Alaska State Museums, Field Education Director for
the Upper Midwest Conservation Association, and instructor for the
Campbell Center's Collections Care Core Curriculum.

Each participant will receive a notebook for samples and handouts from
each session.  The cost for each workshop is only $20.00 for ASDM
members and $30.00 for non-members. There is a discount for signing up
for all five sessions.  Seating is limited at each site, so
