NEW MEDIA PROGRAM INTENSHIP AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY
(SUMMER 2006)

About the Museum and the New Media Program
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The National Museum of American History dedicates its collections and
scholarship to inspiring a broader understanding of our nation and its
many peoples. We create learning opportunities, stimulate
imaginations, and present challenging ideas about our country's past.

The New Media Program strives to create experiences that extend the
Museum's exhibitions and collections and unite the best qualities of a
Museum visit with the flexibility and interactivity of new media
technology. Goals of the program include:
1. Encourage interaction and participation inside and outside the
Museum
2. Promote the Museum and attract audiences
3. Use electronic media to support and disseminate Museum scholarship

As an intern in the New Media Program you will assist with the
day-to-day operations of the museum's Web sites and other special new

of skills and gain exposure to the process of developing and
publishing museum content. Interns collaborate with curators, museum
educators, exhibition designers, and others on various projects
including online exhibitions, collections information, educational
activities and materials, resources for scholars, and a wide range of
visitor services.

Depending on your interests and skills, duties may include researching
and gathering material for the site, image scanning, graphic design,
HTML programming, technology research, general site maintenance, and
miscellaneous office duties. Potential areas for content development
include the HistoryExplorer (http://americanhistory.si.edu/explorer);
a new Web feature about music; potential podcasting opportunities; and
"Featured Object" pieces by written by curators about a favorite
object or an artifact s/he helped to collect for the Museum (e.g.,
http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/object.cfm?key=35&objkey=753
). The Museum has also recently launched a monthly e-mail newsletter
and you will have the opportunity to help build the subscriber list,
promote the newsletter to our audiences, and steer the content of the
newsletter each month. Projects will be designated based on your
individual goals and talents.

Your skills and experience
------------------------------------
At this time we are looking for applicants with basic or intermediate
skills in digital photo editing, HTML programming/Dreamweaver.

have an interest in American history or museums or in using new media
technologies for educational purposes.
