POSITION AVAILABLE: Children's Garden Manager
Department: Education
Salary Classification: Exempt 

General Summary:	
Pre-construction:  Assist and support project team in developing and shaping exhibits, activities, gardens, and facilities.  Develop a complete suite of visitor programs and activities that support garden learning and experience objectives (for informal and formal audiences).  Ensure integration of exhibits, horticulture, and site features with visitor experience and learning objectives.  Recruit and train staff (paid and volunteer) to facilitate experiences and present garden programs.  After the garden opens (Spring 2005) the manager will be responsible for all children and family programming in the garden, including oversight of a youth gardening program.  The manager will administer the day-to-day operations of the garden, develop new programs and activities, train staff and volunteers, conceive and develop new exhibits, market programs to families and educators, and oversee the ongoing integration of garden programs into Arboretum-wide visitor experiences.

Job Qualifications
Previous Training and Experience
Minimum of a BS in horticulture, a natural science, or education, and 5 years education-programming and management experience in a botanical garden, arboretum, nature center, or museum required.  Demonstrated experience in informal learning with children within youth horticulture or the natural sciences and excellent oral and written communication skills.  Experience developing outdoor informal science learning activities for children that support National Science Education Standards a plus.

Physical/mental Requirements
Highly organized individual with the ability and experience to manage multiple simultaneous programs with great attention to detail.  Strong interpersonal skills a must, as are the desire to participate actively in the conceptualization and creation of programs and a genuine enthusiasm for working with children.  Able to work well as part of a team and in a leadership capacity.   Stamina and ability to travel around the garden (4-acres) on paved, wood-chipped, and dirt paths over varied and uneven terrain.

Working Conditions
·Combined indoor and outdoor setting.  Outdoor setting includes leading groups of children and adults in physically vigorous activities (e.g., gardening, walking, climbing), in all weather conditions throughout the four seasons.
·Necessary equipment requires the employee to be able to lift up to thirty pounds.
