Marie and Merri:

A 'purely academic' art historian *IS* a professional art historian. No
professor of art history is purely concerned with classroom space and
slides. Being a professor involves teaching, research, and professional
service. Please do not use 'academic' as some sort of slur, or imply that
an 'academic' is somehow less than 'professional'.

Marie, you said:
"a professional can offer experience from the field and guide you in the
right direction, which is exactly what students need before they graduate.
we all know that programs are lacking in that area."

I know no such thing. I disagree entirely. I suggest you back up such
assertions if you intend to make them. I find your comments, as you can
tell, somewhat insulting.

The difference is that a professional artist or art historian is
interested
in getting their feet wet in the field rather than a purely academic one who
is more concerned about classroom space and slides.
