Hi Sabrina,

exept of the japanese technique there are two old European techniques using holes in the first step of production:
1) Hollie-point or Holy point: english "Nadelspitze" (German), used for baptismal clothings - a ascarf could be used for this purpose, if soft)
2) "Lochstickerei" (German), a way of making patterns by holes which were tightened by circular stitches. These items in most cases remained white or grey or beige as a whole and were not dyed. Only later (2 nd half half of the 20th cent.) handycraft items made everywhere using thicker material (for pillows, scarfs etc. with dyed wool etc.

I am not a textile expert and am writing without seeing the fabric. Either send me the picture directly or put it on the internet. This avoids problems with discussion lists.

Best regards

Christian
