I'm looking for advice on cleaning a collection of antique biological
microscopes, mostly 19th century, but I think that there are a few 18th
century specimens too. (There are also some more recent specimens, but
these ought not be a problem.)

Since this topic is rather esoteric, maybe we could continue this topic
off-list? E-mail addresses below if you can discuss this with me.

I should probably mention that I have a background in laboratory optics,
and intend to clean the lenses and mirrors as well as the brass and
other parts. My main concern is in inadvertently damaging lacquer and
other materials while cleaning. Mostly it is dust and grease (e.g.
fingerprints) that I want to remove.
