Internship Announcement

Flagstaff Area National Monuments—a group of three national parks that
includes Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater Volcano, and Wupatki National
Monuments—has two collection management internships available for Summer
2001.

Stipend: $1,600 per month.

Period of Internship: June-August 2001 (exact start and end dates
negotiable).

Description of Museum/Parks: The Flagstaff Area National Monuments is a
group of three parks administered through a common headquarters. Although
separate and unique parks, established at different times and for different
purposes, the Flagstaff Areas are closely linked to each other and to the
surrounding region through their cultural and natural histories.

Wupatki preserves approximately 2700 archeological sites and is the only
known location in the Southwest where physical evidence from at least three
archeologically separate ancestral Puebloan cultures is found together in a
number of archeological sites.

Sunset Crater Volcano represents the Colorado Plateau’s most recent
volcanic eruption. It is the youngest, least-eroded cinder cone in the San
Francisco Volcanic Field, and is one of the longest-lived cinder cone
volcanoes known in historic time.

Walnut Canyon and the area immediately surrounding the monument contains
hundreds of archeological sites dating mostly to the 11th, 12th, and early
13th centuries A.D. These sites and associated artifacts are the tangible
remains of a prehistoric culture that flourished in the Flagstaff region
from about A.D. 600 until 1400.

The parks’ museum collections consist of approximately 400,000 objects
(30,000 objects stored on-site) including archeological artifacts,
ethnographic objects, natural history specimens (an extensive herbarium),
historic photographs and objects and archival documents. At each of the
monument visitor centers archeology, ethnography, and history objects are
displayed.

Description of Area: Wupatki, Sunset Crater Volcano and Walnut Canyon
National Monuments are located 35 miles north, 15 miles north, and 5 miles
west (respectively) of Flagstaff in northern Arizona. The headquarters
office for the monuments is located in Flagstaff. Flagstaff is a community
with approximately 50,000 residents and is surrounded by National Forest.
Local resources include a university, a community college, local history
museums, a symphony orchestra, restaurants, fast-food chains, shops,
medical facilities, movie theatres, gyms and parks.
