You may want to volunteer for a short time.  Get to know volunteers at the
museum and the staff, because connections do count. Community members
(librarians, Chamber of Commerce, historical societies, etc) can also be
valuable contacts. Find out all you can about the place you want to apply
to; having a sincere interest in the museum's goals is valuable. Best of luck!
