I've tried several "Museum" databases and have found them to have
limitations. I've used Access for a number of years and wouldn't change for
anything. My experience with volunteers has been wonderful. In fact we set
up a discussion meeting with our volunteers, using a digital display
projector, taking their complaints and ideas and worked them into the
database. For you, as a museum staff member who is doing the initial set-up
the learning curve can be steep but what you gain is complete control over
your database with the ability to tailor it to your needs at anytime.
Additionally, if you use Microsoft Office presently you may have a version
that already includes Access. There are many Access books, and a good
discussion forum available on the internet. I have used the Access 2000
Bible and Access For Dummies and had a lot of fun learning the ins and outs.
