I have not been asked to pay for consulting works in collections, but have
been asked to pay for using libraries or archives in doing dissertation
research.  Some of the fees are rather high.  In all cases, I decided not
to undertake the work; fortunately none of the cases were central to my
work.  It certainly does not make me inclined to share any discoveries
with the institutions in question!
