I firmly believe in unions to protect workers who otherwise would be sorely
taken advantage of.

That said, I have seen the effects of unions in white collar professions --
college teaching primarily -- and they have tended to cause more headaches
than they have solved. Once you have a collective bargaining agreement,
rewarding and compensating personal achievement or getting rid of dead wood
becomes much, much harder.

That said, we do need to be paid a living wage. Maurer's "I made my bucks
in the corporate world and now can *afford* to do the work I love"
illustrates the stupidity of the situation. Granted it is an ideal, but
people should be able to afford to do the work they love and are excellent
at without a) having a well-paid husband or b) spending 20 years in
business. Otherwise we lose out on many, many, talented people and get
stuck only with those who can *afford* to do the work, which should *not*
be the determining factor.

Look, I have ONE job on this lousy ship. It's STUPID, but I'm gonna do it,
OKAY?
