We have "barn cats" in Greenfield Village but they are supposed to
remain strictly remain outdoors in our horse and sheep barns. I do
believe that they keep the rodent population down. The use of cats in
museum historic structures is problematic. As I cat owner I've witnessed
the damage that they can cause to furniture and woodwork due to
scratching, small fragile items are often knocked over and urine soiling
can permanently stain surfaces.

We have had success with the removal of food sources as well as the use
of snap traps at night. Of course someone needs to take on the
distasteful task of daily carcass removal.

I am doing some integrated pest management planning, and would like to
consider the pros and cons of "recruiting" a museum cat. I can't seem
to
find much in traditional sources, and I wonder if this is because museum
cats are frequently unofficial/unacknowledged/unauthorized.

If anyone can refer me to articles or other sources that discuss "museum
cats" I would appreciate them. Also, if you have your own stories,
opinions, or caveats, I'd appreciate those as well (on or off list).

Thanks,
