Aaron,

For public workshops I'd recommend show and tell. Allow time for participants to bring in their own problem and/or treasured items. Also, bring examples of light damaged and insect damaged photos or scrapbooks to have them discuss problems and care strategies in a roundtable format. If you have a larger group, you can assign small groups to discuss examples you have on hand.

For professional training, we have found hands-on activities to be extremely important. Even when we structure a workshop around hands on, our participants often comment that they would like even more in their evaluations. Also, product samples and good information about sources and costs are useful. Encapsulating with mylar film and 3M acid-free, double-sided tape might be a good project for your topic. Also, brushing and vacuuming bound volumes.

Feel free to contact me off list if you want example handouts or activities from any of our workshops.

Best regards,
Adrienne Berney

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] preservation workshop experience?

I am an archivist and new to the field. My director and I would both like to host a couple of workshops, one for the public, and one for other, small museum professionals and their volunteers in the area on the topic of preserving photographs and manuscripts. I feel can take them through the preservation ins and outs, but I would like some advice on giving the public some "bang for their buck" at this workshop, from some others who have ran similar sessions before, as this will be the first time I have run one.

Aaron Preston
