they have been around since at least my childhood in the 1950s  and they have grown far more elaborate in recent years.

We see them in SC all the time, usually at accident sites.  I've seen simple crosses, elaborate flower arrangements, and written messages.  I haven't heard of anyone perserving the items.  As for how long they've been around, no idea :(  but it's at least since the late 70s.  (and now I feel very OLD)
