Rare book, art works on way to U.S.

An antique Tibetan medical text and 40 accompanying works of art are
on their way to the U.S. despite efforts by Buddhist clergy to block
their removal from a temple, police in Russia's Far East said
Tuesday. A duty officer in Ulan-Ude, capital of the Buddhist region
of Buryatia, said police foiled the priests' attempt to prevent the
removal of the rare copy of the Atlas of Tibetan Medicine, which will
be flown to the U.S. from Moscow. The book and its art works are 19th
century copies of a 17th century volume destroyed in 1959 following
China's takeover of Tibet. Buryatia authorities had a contract with
Pro-Cultural Inc., of Pleasantville, N.Y., allowing the book and
accompanying paintings to be exhibited in Atlanta, Mexico City,
Washington, D.C., Newark, N.J., Indiana and Colorado through 1999.
