Director, Mütter Museum & Measey Chair for the History of Medicine

The Director of the Mütter Museum will hold the Measey Chair for the History 
of Medicine, have overall responsibility for developing a vision for the future of 
the Mütter Museum and its relationship with the Historical Library, and will 
report directly to the CEO of the College of Physicians in assisting to 
implement the College’s Missions and Goals.

The Museum Director is responsible for the organization's consistent 
achievement of its mission and financial objectives. The critical challenge for 
the Director is to develop a medical history center—The Birthplace of American 
MedicineSM—that serves equally well casual visitors, students from junior high 
through graduate and post graduate schools, and scholars of medical and 
American history, and will address contemporary issues of medicine in the 
context of its historical collections.

S/he must be comfortable with, and enthusiastic about, blending and 
reinforcing object-based Museum artifacts with book-based Historical Library 
materials as well as developing both in a virtual, cyber-world. This position will 
be appropriate for someone with a strong background in history, medicine, 
and/or the biological sciences who has a marked enthusiasm for public service.

Institution-wide responsibilities:
•	Assure that the Mütter Museum and Historical Library have joint, 
mutually-reinforcing long-range strategies and goals, and see that both 
entities progress along these paths in a consistent and timely fashion.
•	Provide leadership in developing programs, developing organizational 
and financial plans, identifying and prioritizing measurable outcomes, and 
carrying out plans and policies while reporting to the CEO.
•	Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of 
the Museum’s and Historical Library’s work.
•	Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends 
in the fields of medical history as well as library and museum practice.
•	Help to cultivate and secure outside funding sources of support and 
provide stewardship of funds.

In communications, the Director will:
•	See that the CEO is kept fully informed on the condition of the 
Museum and its relationship with the Historical Library, their mutually-
reinforcing programs, and all important factors influencing them.
•	Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.
•	Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements 
with museums, cultural and government agencies, community groups, and 
other organizations.
•	Represent the Mütter Museum and the Historical Library to the 
scholarly and cultural communities, regionally and nationally, raise the profile 
of the Mütter, the Historical Library, and the College of Physicians of 
Philadelphia in the medical, library, and museum communities.
•	Serve as liaison with the media and publicize the activities of the 
organization, its programs and goals.

In relations with staff, the Director will:
•	Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, supervision, and 
release of all Museum Historical Library personnel, both paid staff and 
volunteers in consultation with the CEO.
•	Ensure that job descriptions are developed, and that regular 
performance evaluations are held.
•	Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and 
assist program staff in aligning their specialized work to the long-range 
strategy of the College.
•	Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse 
staff of top quality people.

In budget and finance, the Museum Director will:
•	Work with the staff and the CEO in preparing a budget; align 
resources with goals, and see that the organization operates within budget 
guidelines.
•	Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization 
to carry out its work.
•	Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial 
practices.
•	Gather and interpret useful operating and financial data.

In relation to external organizations:
•	We would expect the candidate to be eligible for an appointment in 
the appropriate department at an area college or university
•	Develop and maintain close ties with other academic and cultural 
institutions and organizations in the Philadelphia area.
•	Develop, promulgate, and teach appropriate course(s) at/with other 
institutions as appropriate to the candidate’s expertise.
•	Helps to cultivate and secure outside funding sources of support and 
provide stewardship of funds.

Qualifications: 
•	Advanced study in science, the history of science, medicine, or a 
closely related field.  An advanced degree is strongly preferred.
•	Demonstrable experience in public history program development and 
implementation.
•	Minimum 5 years progressive experience in museum senior 
management including fundraising experience.
•	Experience in successful grant writing and sponsorship acquisition.
•	Excellent written and oral communications skills, including public 
speaking.
