Two important perspectives come to mind: contemporary African American women
artists Lorna Simpson and Carrie Mae Weems have both used photography and
installation techniques to create effective evocations/critiques of the
ante-bellum South. Lorna Simpson's work was presented in Charleston at the
Spoleto Festival several years back. Her gallery is Josh Baer, 476 Broome
St., NY, NY 10013. Tel. 212-431-4774; fax 212-431-3631. They could tell you
more about it /send you slides or stills. Carrie Mae Weems currently has a
show on tour that includes her "Sea Island" series, an installation of
photographs, plates with folk wisom on them, and framed texts. That was
organized by Susan Fisher Sterling and Andrea Kirsch for the National Museum
of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. The museum's tel. is 202-783-5000.
