Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, Orange County, CA. advertises itself as
the first theme park in the U.S. Walter Knott purchased a ghost town in So
Cal called Calico and transported buildings to his farm in OC where he
created a western theme park and hired actors from nearby Hollywood and
others to be characters that visitors could take pictures with. Knott's is
still one of So Cal's major tourist centers and has tried to upgrade their
efforts at edutainment with the opening of Indian Trails as a education and
entertainment area. The experiment is moving back toward entertainment as
they try to retain the tourist trade during the economic slow down in
California.
