The Smithsonian Institution will host "Museums for the New
Millenium," September 5-7, 1996, a symposium for the museum
community in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the
Smithsonian. The program will bring together museum
professionals from the United States and abroad to explore the
implications of radical social, economic, technological and
political change on the nature and structure of museums for the
coming decades. Through plenary and break-out sessions, speakers
and participants will identify and interpret significant emerging
issues in the field, disseminate new information and diverse
perspectives, and examine the role and function of museums in the
21st century.

Speakers for the plenary sessions are:

    *Ellsworth Brown, President, The Carnegie
*Harold Skramstad, President, Henry Ford Museum and
     Greenfield Village
   * Robert Janes, President, The Glenbow Museum
   * Bran Ferrin, Executive Vice President for Creative
Technology and Research & Development, Walt Disney
     Imagineering

"Museums for the New Millenium" includes an opening reception on
the evening of September 5; plenary and concurrent break-out
sessions, all day, September 6 and 7; and a special luncheon,
September 7, featuring a presentation about the history and role
of the Smithsonian Board of Regents. A special feature of the
symposium will be a technology showcase demonstrating the latest
advancements in museum-related computer applications. This area
will be available to participants at scheduled times during the
symposium.

There is no registration fee for the symposium. Due to limited
space, individuals are urged to register before August 1 to
receive complimentary lunch on September 7. The registration form
will be available from the Center for Museum Studies.
