The Amistad Research Center is the nation's largest repository of
manuscripts on African American history and culture. Its variable holdings
also include an extensive collection of rare and first edition books,
specialized serials, and a nationally renowned collection of museum
quality, African American art by 19th and 20th century masters such as
Henry Ossawa Tanner, Edward Mitchell Bannister, William E. Scott, Romare
Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, and William
H. Johnson.
The Center is currently seeking venues for a travelling exhibition
of its Toussaint L' Ouvertue Collection by Jacob Lawrence for the 1997-98
year.
The rental fee is $5,000.00 per eight week period. The forty-one
paintings in the Series is the artist's first historical narrative series.
It is accompanied by three text panels, one which contains biographical
information on the artist, another which provides information on the Series
and its relationship to the Amistad Research Center's other Museum
holdings, and the final panel will contain biographical information on
Toussaint L' Ouverture.
Borrowers are responsible for the shipping, transportation and
insurance of the works. It is a high security exhibition and standard
facility reports are required of all potential borrowing institutions.
The Center also offers mini catalogs to accompany the exhibition.
These catalogs which are a limited edition collector's item are now
out-of-print. They are offered at the wholesale price of $15 each with
purchases of one hundred or more. We will also offer an instructional
package for teachers which includes a complete set of slides of the Series,
35 children's booklets which feature maps, images, and bibliographic
references and one cassette tape for one hundred dollars each.
A deposit of 50% of the total rental fee is required to secure
exhibition dates. Please feel free to contact me directly, should you
desire further discussion on this matter.
