Long ago and far away (1950s), when I worked for my Dad in his gas station,
we cleaned everything with gasoline and kerosene ... and a screw driver or
putty knife to scrape and then wash some more ...

this is a gas pump!

Hi Lonn,
It is great to see you posting.  I would think that either kerosene or
mineral spirits should clean up the grease and dirt without affecting the
paint.  It should be tested first in an inconspicuous spot.  Also, as with
any solvent, it should be used with adequate ventilation and while wearing
nitrile gloves.
